Welcome! Here’s a Bit More About Us…..
May of 1990 witnessed the birth of two things near and dear to the hearts of many.
On NBC, a “show about nothing” made its series debut, introducing the world to Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer.
And in Hoboken, New Jersey, a modest four page newsletter very much about something – how to write wonderful children’s books – arrived in the mailboxes of a few hundred brave people who had answered a small classified ad in the back of Writer’s Digest.
Now, more than three decades later, Seinfeld is in eternal reruns. But Children’s Book Insider is still at it, transformed into a lushly illustrated e-magazine with a star lineup of contributors, and always working tirelessly to live up to our motto:
The Children’s Writing Monthly.

A Continuing Quest to Empower Writers & Inspire Young Readers
While we’re not quite bold (or delusional) enough to declare CBI’s cultural impact on a par with Jerry and the gang, we are exceedingly proud of the untold number of wonderful children’s books our readers and students have given the world’s children. And it warms us to reflect on how the lives of those writers have been infused with more meaning, fulfillment and joy as a result of the doors we helped them open.
We’re pretty low-key folks, and we aren’t especially comfortable blowing our own horns. So we’ll leave the superlatives to the kind readers who have offered their testimonials over the years. You’ll find them scattered throughout the site.
But we do know that no one has offered – and continues to offer – more heartfelt, useful and comprehensive advice for working and aspiring children’s book writers than we have, through the pages of Children’s Book Insider, our Writing Blueprints Step-by-Step Writing Guides and our acclaimed line of video workshops, the WriteForKids Sessions.
We don’t chase trends or head down every new technological rabbit hole. Our focus is on one thing: Providing timeless, yet thoroughly up-to-date advice that gives writers the tools they need to craft beautiful stories and share them with the world.
Our Story So Far…
..in a place called New York City, a boy met a girl.
The boy practiced a form of magical wizardry known as "public relations". The girl was a mystical creature known as a "literary agent". She was known far and wide for her wondrous skills in divining joyous children's books from thin air.
Our heroes soon became a family. Here they are on their honeymoon, in which they made a mythic trek to a strange and wild village they would later call home - New Orleans:
Everywhere the pair went, they were greeted by would-be scribes who, having discovered the girl's occupation, invariably declared "I've always wanted to write a children's book! How do I do it?"
Soon, the boy and the girl realized what their life-long quest would be: to help people become children's book writers by teaching them exactly how to do it!
And with that, Children's Book Insider was born! Now, more than 30 years later, the boy and girl still carry on with their life's work -- helping intrepid seekers reach their ultimate goal... a published children's book.
Of course, a few things have changed, as we see in the picture below. The boy has lost his hair, a new addition named Matt joined the clan, and the girl somehow manages to look younger than she did when they met.
And thus, the tale of Jon, Laura and Children's Book Insider continues onward. And you, dear reader, are now part of the story!
What We Believe:
- The world's children need and deserve wonderful books that educate, entertain and inspire.
and
- Anyone dreaming of writing for children should have the finest tools and guidance to achieve their goal, regardless of experience, financial resources or location.
